SB 1203 PASSES OUT OF ASSEMBLY APPROPRIATIONS

Statement from CALSAGA on SB 1203 Advancing out of Assembly Appropriations Committee
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Association of Licensed Security Agencies, Guards & Associates (CALSAGA) issued the following statement from President David Chandler after SB 1203 passed out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee, with amendments.
“CALSAGA will review the amendments, however, we remain fundamentally concerned with SB 1203 because it will hurt the very people it intends to help. The bill drives up the cost of security until it’s unaffordable, which will lead to fewer guards, more reliance on surveillance technology, and less live protection for people and property.
“Ninety percent of businesses that hire security officers are small businesses. They can’t absorb a labor cost spike like this. Something has to give, and staffing is at risk.
“We’ve seen this before with fast food. Higher labor costs led to fewer workers and more machines doing the job. What’s at stake is more serious than ordering burger from a touchscreen. It’s a bank, strip mall, or school with fewer trained guards standing watch.”
With this passage, the bill will now head to the Assembly floor for a final vote before the end of August. Should the bill pass, it will go to the Governor’s desk.
