We are sad to report the passing of Al Howenstein. A tireless industry ambassador, Mr. Howenstein was the Founder and previous Executive Director of CALSAGA.

After many years in law enforcement, Mr. Howenstein dedicated the latter part his career to advocating on behalf of the private security industry and played a key role in forging relationships between CALSAGA and other key influencers in the private security industry, the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services and members of the California Legislature. His many contributions to law enforcement and the private security industry include serving in law enforcement for twenty-four years, twice elected Sheriff of Marin County, a gubernatorial appointment as Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Criminal Justice Planning, and serving as Criminal Justice Advisor to Governor George Deukmejian.

In 2010 CALSAGA created the Al Howenstein Lifetime Achievement Award to honor security professionals. Mr. Howenstein has left us with a legacy of service and an example of dedication. In addition to his service to CALSAGA, he was involved with The Rotary Club and various other philanthropic organizations.

We express our sincere condolences to the Howenstein family, his friends and all of us who were impacted by him.
